国际支原体组织(The International Organization for Mycoplasmology, IOM) 1974- 1976 年筹备成立, 旨在加强支原体研究的国际合作与交流, 1976 年, 在Glasgow召开了第一届国际支原体大会( IOM Congress) ,以后每两年一届分别在Freiburg(1978),Custer(1980),Tokyo(1982),Jerusalem(1984),Birmingham(1986),Baden(1988),Istanbul(1990),Iowa(1992),Bordeaux(1994),Florida(1996) 召开了第二至十一届大会,第十二届IOM大会于1998年7月22-28日在澳大利悉尼科技园召开。

为控制人类、动物支原体疾病,控制细胞培养和实验动物的支原体污染,IOM 制订了比较支原体学国际研究规划( The International Research Programme on Comparative Mycoplasmology,IRPCM ),1996年IRPCM设十三个研究课题:

12 Mycoplasmal Arthritis
13 Mycoplasmas, Aids and Other Immunodeficiencies
